Gateways to Freedom – A 5Rhythms® Movement Workshop
by Evangelos Diavolitsis
Evangelos Diavolitsis

Doing the 5Rhythms is about waking up to your most essential nature. Stretching your intuition and imagination as surely as your body. It’s a formless form, one that expands your range of physical and emotional expression and introduces you to forgotten parts of your psyche. It awakens intuitive intelligence and artistic sensibilities. Working out should be inspiring, not just riding some bicycle while reading People magazine. Working out should be like having a conversation with your body and spirit; it should be personal, intimate, and holy, not boring and painfully repetitive.

Instead of pumping iron, I dance. Not ballet, not modern, but a different kind of dance. The 5Rhythms of flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical, and stillness are patterns of movement that anyone can do every day as a spiritual practice, a workout for body and soul. It does not matter what your body structure is or your skill level. They are waiting for you to discover them and unleash their magic.

Freedom unfolds when we learn the fine art of making all our physical actions conscious. Otherwise, we remain tuned out as we rush through our unending list of things-to-do. When we are unconscious, we miss out on the joy of embodied investigation and being totally present to the richness of who we are. This movement workshop will guide us as we move—at our own pace—through the five universal rhythms: Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness. Each rhythm provides a practical and joyful tool that unleashes the freedom for which we all yearn. Free the body, then everything else comes naturally.

This life-transforming practice is suitable for all ages and all levels of physical fitness. It will also support whatever practice you are exploring now, or offer a strong start to self-exploration. No previous experience is necessary.

I have a passion for integrating the path of awakening with movement, art, and business. My students enjoy my diverse explorations and creative atmosphere, combining a sense of adventure and safety, while weaving a delicate chemistry of humour and intensity. I have taught across Canada, Asia, Europe, and in the US.

Evangelos Diavolitsis is a certified 5Rhythms facilitator and meditation teacher who trained directly with movement shaman Gabrielle Roth. He has been continuously studying with meditation master Achariya Doug Duncan of the Namgyal Lineage since 2002. He has also received teachings from Sakya Trinzin, Lama Ole, and the Dalai Lama. Currently based in Calgary and working with La Caravan Dance, this will be Evangelos’ first time teaching in Saskatoon.
